Preparing for your pet's upcoming surgery.

Q: When do I drop my pet in for surgery?

All surgery patients are admitted between 9:30am - 10:00am the morning of their surgery day.

Q: Does my pet need to be fasting for surgery?

As your pet will require an anaesthetic, we ask that you have them fasting from 10pm the night before their surgery. They can have a small amount of water during this time.

Q: How long will my pet be kept in the clinic for?

Your pet will stay in with us for the day and one of our nurses will give you a call after surgery to arrange a time to collect them.

Q: Will my pet have to wear a cone after surgery?

Depending on the surgery, some patients will not be required to wear a cone but for the majority, your pet will have to wear a cone whilst the stitches are still in. The cone prevents your pet from excessively licking/biting at the wound, which can cause infection or a breakdown of the wound itself.

Q: When can the stitches be removed?

Stitches are removed between day 10 - 14 post surgery. Upon discharging your pet, a nurse will ask you to arrange a post operation check for 3 - 4 days after surgery. During this check, a nurse will do a quick examination of the wound area to ensure it is healing well and they will advise you on the best day to come back for the stitches to be removed.

Q: Can I bring my pet out for exercise after surgery?

We recommend keeping your pet as quiet as possible whilst they have their stitches in. Avoid jumping, running, long walks and any off leash exercise while the stitches are healing as this can cause damage to the wound. All of your after care instructions will be included in your discharge sheet, which are also available to download on the website.

Q: Can I give my pet something to eat after surgery?

You can offer your pet a small amount of food when they return home that evening. Please be aware that a lot of patients tend to not have much interest in food for around 24 hours after surgery.
