Parasite Treatments for my Pet

Updated: Jun 26

A lot of pet owners wonder where to start when it comes to treating their pets for parasites, both internal and external. This post will inform you of the treatments we have available here in our clinic and how often you should be using them in order to keep your pets protected.

Kittens:

Ideally, a kitten should be wormed from 2 - 3 weeks of age and treated every 2 weeks up until they are 12 weeks old. In regards to external parasite treatments, check with your veterinarian to see what treatments are available for your kitten depending on their age and weight.

Adult Cats:

Adult cats can be treated for worms every 3 months and the length of time between external parasite treatments depends on the product used. For cats that spend a lot of time outdoors, we recommend treating them more regularly for both internal and external parasites as they tend to be more at risk of picking them up.

Puppies:

Depending on the product used, puppies can be wormed from 2 weeks of age and treatment should be repeated every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks of age and then once monthly until they are 6 months old. Check with your veterinarian what external parasite treatments are available for your puppy based on their age and weight.

Adult Dogs:

Adult dogs can be wormed every 3 months once they are over 6 months of age. Once again, the time between external parasite treatments depends on the product you use to treat your dog.

So, what treatments do we have available in our clinic?

Tips when treating your pets:

Always check how long your parasite treatment lasts as some treatments will protect your pet for longer than other products.

Keep track of your pet's weight as this will ensure your pet is getting the correct amount of treatment each time.

We advise keeping up with both your pet's worming and flea/tick treatment throughout the year. Some people believe they only need to treat their pets for ticks/fleas during the warmer months but fleas can survive in your home for months due to central heating. They can continue to breed and become a nightmare to get rid of if left untreated.

Should your pet catch fleas, it is important to disinfect and treat the home thoroughly whilst treating your pet as they can continue to breed in the environment.
